HUMBUG MOUNTAIN STATE PARK*
Where: Six miles south of Port Orford on Highway 101.
With a trout stream and the ocean a short hike away, this year-round
park is a popular destination. It has 100 campsites, 35 with electricity
(rates are $16 per night May 1 to September 30 and $12 October 1
to April 30), and the remaining 65 spaces are tent sites ($14 May
1 to September 30 and $10 October 1 to April 30). There are five
pull-through sites. Each campsite is limited to eight people. Extra
vehicles are charged $7 a night. All campsites, including the hiker/biker
sites ($4 a night), have picnic tables and fire rings. Most campsites
are handicapped accessible.
Campground has handicapped accessible
hot showers ($2 fee if not camping) and flush toilets, a RV dumpsite,
and firewood for sale. There is also an amphitheater that seats fifty
for summer craft programs and slide shows; many part of the Junior
Ranger program. There is a day-use area available for group tenting
and picnics, with a gazebo that has tables, water and electricity.*
The campground is in the “banana belt” that has some
of the warmest weather on the Oregon coast as the surrounding mountains
offer protection from our famous winds and winter storms. Windsurfing,
kayaking, and scuba diving are popular along this coastline. Humbug
Mountain (elevation 1,756 feet) dominates the park and campground
with its switchback trails leading to the top. Hiking to the top
of Humbug Mountain is a major activity ideal for bird watching among
native plants and animals. There are nearby forests, canyons and
wetlands for further exploration.
*Reservations for the regular campsites are not necessary, however,
reservations are necessary for Cape Blanco Campground horse camp,
group campsite, and log cabins, and Humbug Mountain day-use area.
